In 2008, the Andhra Pradesh government expanded the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and constituted the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). In Hyderabad, it is the HMDA that looks after the city’s overall development. It covers 7,100 sq kms of area within its jurisdiction which previously came under the HUDA, Buddha Purnima Project Authority (BPPA), Hyderabad Airport Development Authority (HADA) and the Cyberabad Development Authority (CDA).

The HMDA has currently undertaken the development of the Inner Ring Road (IRR) that will facilitate quick commuting from many areas in Hyderabad. The IRR will pass through Masab Tank, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Begumpet, Mettuguda, Tarnaka, Habsiguda, Uppal, Nagole, LB Nagar, Santoshnagar Crossroads, Chandrayangutta, Aramghar, Attapur and Rethi Bowli, which is a 50-km stretch.

Development of commercial complexes
The HMDA also develops commercial complexes, such as the Maitrivanam Commercial Complex, Maitrivihar Commercial Complex, Swarna Jayanthi Commercial Complex, etc.

Construction of flyovers, bridges and roadworks
There are a number of flyovers constructed in the city including the airport flyover, CTO junction flyover, Harihara Kalabhavan, Tarnaka, Basheerbagh and others, the latest being the Hitec City Junction built in 2010.
Similarly, the HMDA has also undertaken infrastructure work in the form of bridges, such as the Parallel Bridge to Nayapul over River Musi, the bridge across Musi River at Bapu Ghat and road over bridge at Kukatpally on Spinal Road over the railway line in 2013.

The HMDA has also developed an IT and ITeS SEZ at Kokapet in an area of about 119 acres, by providing infrastructure facilities and the PVNR Expressway.
